{"id":564,"date":"2010-05-13T20:43:57","date_gmt":"2010-05-13T20:43:57","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/theinsularempire.com\/?page_id=564"},"modified":"2017-08-04T22:47:37","modified_gmt":"2017-08-04T22:47:37","slug":"guam-military-buildup","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/theinsularempire.com\/?page_id=564","title":{"rendered":"Guam Military Buildup"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On the tiny island of Guam, the United States Department of Defense is currently preparing a massive military buildup, testing the limits of the islanders\u2019 long-standing patriotism and loyalty to the US. This proposed buildup threatens Guam\u2019s indigenous culture, fragile natural environment, and crumbling infrastructure; and the DoD\u2019s Draft Environmental Impact Statement (DEIS) received the US EPA\u2019s lowest possible rating, \u201cenvironmentally unsatisfactory.\u201d But the buildup continues, and the local community is powerless to stop it.<\/p>\n<p>The indigenous people of Guam \u2013 most of whom have family members serving in the US military \u2013 are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=X032t6rkmn8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">speaking out<\/a> in unprecedented numbers against this buildup. Yet many people in the Northern Marianas are eager to bring a US military base to their islands.
