Without the Earth there is nothing &#8211; so why do we only give it one day?<\/p>\n<p>On the other hand, Earth Day does give a lot of groups who are fighting for the Earth a platform to get the word out. This past week (Earth Day seems, happily, to be bleeding into Earth Week) there were many actions to draw attention to the US military&#8217;s plans for increased presence in the Asia-Pacific region.<\/p>\n<p>Famoksaiyan, in collaboration with several other organizations, <a href=\"http:\/\/famoksaiyanwc.wordpress.com\/2010\/04\/25\/earth-day-press-conference-4-22-2010\/\">held a press conference <\/a>across the street from the EPA\u2019s Earth Day Festival at Yerba Buena  Garden. &#8220;The massive build up on Guam directly contradicts efforts to protect our  environment from global warming,\u201d said Reverend Deborah Lee, a member  of Women for Genuine Security, the local chapter of a global women\u2019s  network that works to protect the health and safety of communities  around US military bases. \u201cThe US military has an enormous carbon  footprint which must be addressed for the health of local communities  and the security of our entire planet.\u201d<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both; text-align: center;\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignright\" style=\"border: 0px initial initial;\" src=\"http:\/\/1.bp.blogspot.com\/_MA6TSuti-Y8\/S9ZeoHQIdAI\/AAAAAAAAD-Y\/xVgtf2Yzz1g\/s320\/okinawaprotestyomitan425.jpg\" border=\"0\" alt=\"\" width=\"256\" height=\"141\" \/><\/div>\n<p>Meanwhile, on Okinawa,<a href=\"http:\/\/minagahet.blogspot.com\/2010\/04\/90000-protest-in-okinawa.html\"> nearly 100,000 people turned out to protest <\/a>the planned relocation of the US military base from Futenma to Henoko (or anywhere else in Okinawa). In South Korea, <a href=\"http:\/\/tenthousandthingsfromkyoto.blogspot.com\/2010\/04\/peace-missal-held-at-gangjeong-jeju.html\">Catholic fathers held a Peace Missal <\/a>against proposed construction of a nuclear weapons naval base on Jeju Island.
